“Facing History” Conference Moves to Stanford Faculty Club
April 8, 2015

Amid pressure from campus activists, Saturday’s conference has been moved to the Stanford University Faculty Club, located at 439 Lagunita Drive. The move was orchestrated by the medical school administration following a petition that threatened a serious protest on the medical school campus during admitted students day if the conference did not move.

“We look forward to our conference going forward as planned at this new location,” said Elisa Figueroa, co-president of the Stanford Anscombe Society. “It was unfortunate that the administration felt it needed to respond to pressure from would-be protesters by renegotiating our contract, but we are pleased that the conference will move forward as scheduled and remains on campus.”

The conference, entitled “Facing History: The Legacy of the Sexual Revolution,” marks the second annual initiative of the Stanford Anscombe Society to bring students, faculty, and supporters from across Stanford’s campus and other universities on the West Coast together to discuss the role of marriage, family, and sexual integrity in society. Space is still available for the April 11th event, and registration will remain open through Friday, April 10th. Tickets can be purchased at stanfordanscombe.org at $15.00 for student admission and $30.00 for general admission. At least 70 stanford students, faculty, and alumni are expected to attend.

“We are proud to attend a university like Stanford, which prides itself on being a place where a diversity of ideas can come into conversation with one another. Often conversations on campus concerning marriage and sexuality omit a variety of perspectives, with discussions promoting sexual integrity being pushed off campus. Our conference aims to present an alternative viewpoint, one in support of sexual integrity, and thus invite genuine dialogue at Stanford on these serious issues,” Figueroa explained.

“Facing History” will address the major shifts that happened in American society during the 1960s, the legacy of which has been marked by decreasing rates of marriage and childbirth, increasing rates of pre-marital cohabitation and divorce, and the emergence of the pro-choice movement. The Facing History conference will examine the roots of this movement discussing its revolutionary ideas about sexual ethics and their wide-reaching impact on modern society. Speakers include nationally-recognized scholars Dr. Catherine Pakaluk, Dr. Jason Carroll, Dr. William Hurlbut, Dr. Chris Tollefsen, and more.

Founded in 2011 by two freshmen, the SAS is a university-approved student group that seeks to promote the value of marriage, family, and sexual integrity on campus. The SAS is neither religiously nor politically affiliated, instead relying on weekly secular discussions and guest lectures to foster intellectual discussion on relevant topics.
